What You Need to Know About Carpet Cleaning

Nothing ruins a living space faster than a dirty or stain-riddled carpet.  Unfortunately, carpets do get dirty despite your best efforts of keeping it looking as pristine as they did when they were first installed.  Carpets will eventually get spilled on, tracked mud on, and various other accidents that most of the time will leave marks – no matter how careful you are.  To help keep your carpet stain-free and immaculately spotless, we’ve put together a few tips on the right way to do carpet cleaning.

Blot the Spot

In carpet cleaning, technique is as important as the product you’re using to clean.  For stains and spills, never ever wipe or rub.  Doing so would not only spread the stain, it would also unnecessarily wear down your carpet fibres.  The correct way to treat a stain during carpet cleaning is to gently blot the stain with a paper towel or a clean cloth and a cleaning solution. Blot gently, putting a bit of pressure to help soak up the stain.

There are quite a lot of carpet cleaning products available in stores however, there are a few household items that you can readily use if you find yourself in a carpet cleaning emergency.  One such example is club soda and vinegar.  If you accidentally spill some beer or red wine onto your carpet, soak a clean cloth with some club soda and gently blot the spill out.

For tougher stains, you can mix one part club soda with one part white vinegar.  Pour the mix inside a spray bottle and lightly spritz the stained area.  Let the solution sit on the stained carpet for approximately 15 minutes then use a clean sponge to lift and soak up the cleaning solution and the stain away from your carpet.  Once the stain is lifted, gently dab warm water onto the area to rinse away and residual carpet cleaning solution.  Place paper towels on the damp area, weigh them down with something substantial then leave it for roughly a day until the area is completely dry.  Check the towels once in a while in case you might have to change them out with dry ones.

Carpet cleaning does not have to be a stressful process.  By knowing a few simple tricks, you can address accidental stains and spills quite effectively.  However, to help keep your carpet from looking worn out and old, it is recommended that you have it professionally cleaned by carpet cleaning experts at least once every two months.
